Carnelian Meaning & Properties

Picture yourself in the forest on a cool, crisp morning kicking playfully in a pile of crimson leaves.

That giddy, youthful sensation represents Carnelian perfectly – no worries and for just one moment you are Velveteen Rabbit real.

Think of that story for a minute – the depth of love, a story of enduring all odds and truly living life to the fullest. This harvest orange-red healing crystal embodies that and so much more. It’s the warmth of a late-day sun that scratches your back in all the right places, stimulating hope.

This is the exquisite, fiery healing crystal Carnelian.

A type of chalcedony, carnelian’s Latin title meant flesh, which is why it became treasured in a Light healer’s kit for any “flesh” oriented problems, and they were not alone in their reverence. Egyptian master builders and architects wore it as a sign of accomplishment. Metaphysically we can use this symbolism in becoming the masters of our fates, physically and spiritually.

The energy vortex of Carnelian has the courage of a lion and roars like one too. When you want to find your voice and deliver a message consider this crystal like a spiritual candy gram – the information arrives safely, with all necessary understanding.

Egyptians conveyed, however, that the shade of the Carnelian changes its application and aspect. The lighter color (orange) symbolized the Goddess Aspect. The darker red was the God aspect. In either form this stone has strong protective elements keeping illness at bay, and particularly plagues. When you work with Carnelians safeguarding energies it will ask you: What is your plague?

Perhaps pause and think on that carefully because the Carnelian knows you can’t move on until you figure out what holds you back. In many instances, the color association implies difficulties in the area of love, desire or passion. Red is fire, and when fire burns too hard, too fast and is all consuming it either dies or has to be put so as to avoid more carnage.

That same fire, however, stimulates amazing drive in people who might otherwise have the mantra of “why put off today what you can put off tomorrow.” The stamina that Carnelian brings to the auric field pushes athletes, ladder-climbing executives and artists on a deadline to new heights. Often, this results in prosperity and good fortune (hard work is good magick).

On the home front Carnelian carvings provide protection from storms, household mishaps and thievery. It really earns its reputation as the “Mecca Stone” in a figurative sense.

Feng Shui credits it with bringing happiness into a home and adjusting the overall flow of energies for abundance. If being used for this purpose pair it with Citrine in your home office or in the southeast region, which represents money and sustenance. Also leave some outside around your home as it naturally creates a sense of community for building good relationships with your neighbors (yes, people really do still share good advice over the proverbial fence).

Something really interesting about Carnelian is that wax doesn’t stick to it, which is why people carved it into seals or signets. Spiritually speaking that gives this metaphysical crystal another application – that of keeping negativity from “clinging” to your aura. Let it slip right off and walk away humming a happy tune.

Besides its connection with the flesh (carnal knowledge) there is another theory that Carnelian took its name from the Kornel cherry, which bears similar coloration.

No matter the exact linguistic ties the darker the Carnelian crystal, the more it resonates with the base or root chakra. If you’re working on grounding – go with dark red; if you’re opening matters of the heart look for pink hues.
