Water Element Symbolism & Meaning

Typically located in the West of a Sacred Circle, Water beings are called Undines (like the playful Sylphs of Air, or the Salamanders of Fire).

These beings thrive on intention, devotion, love, happiness, thankfulness and mutability.

Water is a relatively simple Element with which to work. When you’re stressed out, just rinse those energies off your hands. By turning the Water to warm, you add the Fire Element. Once released, cool the Water for regenerative, invigorating vibrations.

Our tears are salt water and an excellent conveyer of spiritual intention. You can mark personal ritual items with your tears, use them in potions or apply them as anointing.

Just remember that the emotion you felt upon releasing your tears will become part of your working.

It is very important to remember that humans are mostly water-based. So our entire being already resonates with Water, it’s just a matter of recognizing it more intimately. This Elemental soaks us with love, and magic worked from a place of love is very powerful.

Other goals for which the Water Element may help metaphysically include compassion, higher mysteries, psychic development; community; insight, healing and relationships.

Divination & the Element of Water

On a night when the moon hangs low over a boxy of water, it’s the perfect moment to try Water Scrying.

The moon governs water’s ebb and flow. The water’s surface becomes like a mirror. By un-focusing your eyes, the shimmer twists and turns until pictures appear similarly to using a crystal ball. It’s easiest to do this with a question in mind so that the symbols make sense later. Mind you, if there’s no lake or ocean near by a simple bowl of water suffices.

Another approach to Water Divination was observing the movement of items set afloat. Diviners might use a laurel leaf, for example. The leaf goes on the water before you voice a question. A leaf that sinks answers your question positively.

Tarot & the Water Element

In the Tarot the Water Element is represented by the Suit of Cups.

As the Element of Water itself, the Suit of Cups focuses on our conscious feelings and chosen relationships. Each card reflects another way in which we express ourselves in word and deed, as well as the inner-workings of the complex creature called love.

Additional symbolic meanings for Cups include our inventive nature, the ability to imagine, self-expression and a feminine/receptive energetic vibration.

Numerology & the Element of Water

Vibrationally, the Element of Water is in alignment with the Master Number 22.

In Numerology, the Master Number 22 is the builder of Numerology. It takes our dreams and aspirations and helps us manifest them even as the Water Element does.

The success inherent in the Master Number 22 comes from its strong intuitive nature coupled with discipline. The saying “water always finds a way” certainly reflects these characteristics. Like the billions of drops of water in the ocean, the potential with 22 is limitless!

The Zodiac & Water Signs

Astrologically the Water Element governs Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces

Both moody and insightful, Western Zodiac Water Signs have a tendency to bring people together just like a fresh body of water gathers thirsty souls.

Like Water, these personalities have trouble with boundaries – they leak into any crack and crevice, sometimes ending up in quite a pickle. Of the three, Cancer people lead the way providing initiative. Scorpio is very thoughtful and the Pisces is forever swimming off with the tide.

Like the ocean, astrologically speaking, water symbolizes layers and undercurrents. If you don’t look closely, you’re likely to miss important matters about these people. This spirit also has a propensity to naturally see what others overlook completely, which makes some people uncomfortable. Be prepared for unanticipated, startling observations.

For example, ice may represent a situation that’s static or “frozen”. Murky water portends hidden matters or troubles. Being splashed by water is a wakeup call to something you’ve swept under the carpet.

I really like lapis and started there. My birthstone is Opal and tourmaline. Those are next. My birth sign is Libra. I actually have many gemstones, precious, semi-precious. I want to learn about the beautiful crystals and other items related to my choices in jewelery.

I have had trouble with frozen water pipes this winter. Your explanation for water was very helpful to me I appreciate it. I have also had trouble with doors being blown off their hinges and I was trying to look up the meaning for doors when someone mentioned to me maybe it’s air. Sure enough, when I looked up air on your site it fit my situation perfectly. I now know what I need to do. Thank you for your help
