My personal story

I’m a professional psychic medium and tarot reader, lover of puns and exclamation points!

Like you, I’m a seeker.

As a Scorpio, the “why” of everything has always been the knowledge I most sought. Face value holds little value for me. The depths are where I aim when diving into, well, anything.

It’s only when we get down the nitty gritty, the underbelly of things, can we really know the truth.

For me, the two truths that matter most are – where did we come from and where the heck are we going after we die?

But, those only became the truths more important to me after…

How I became a psychic medium

On January 5, 1997 my mom, Patricia B. Carter, was killed due to medical negligence which resulted in her wrongful death. When she presented in the ER that morning, a staff member at the hospital pulled the wrong records and my mom was treated based on a complete stranger’s medical history. Erroneously applied procedures and medications induced her fatal heart attack.

Perhaps if the attending cardiologist had recognized my mom as his own patient from private practice, perhaps if he’d gotten to her bed sooner than the 18 minutes that are documented…

She was only 61.

We’d never been a spiritual or even religious family so I didn’t ascribe to any particular doctrine’s outline of what happens after death. The only thing I believed in back then was the excruciating pain cocooning every part of me.

After attending a wide variety of church ceremonies in an effort to find out what happened to “her”, the only thing I knew for sure was that my mom was still ‘out there’…somewhere…and I was going to find her – whatever it took.

Over the next couple years I spent more than fifteen thousand dollars on readings with any psychic, spirit medium, clairvoyant, tarot card reader, medical intuitive, channeler, spiritual counselor, etc. who appeared even remotely credible.

The books and CD’s I bought could fill a New Age store, I never missed an episode of Crossing Over with John Edward and lemme’ tell ya, there are more psychic fairs and metaphysical expos in this country than one could shake a smudge stick at.

In all my travels, there were definitely intuitives who connected with my mom. And others who were connected only to presidents – specifically those who appear on legal tender.

The only consistent message I got from the clairvoyants was that I was “a very gifted psychic and would work in the field one day”. To which I always responded, “Baloney.”

One morning, exhausted and depressed to very depths of what I now believe to be a soul, I thought to myself, “OK, look, you know there’s some truth in all this boogedy-boogedy ‘stuff’. Don’t be a schmuck. See if you can connect to your mom yourself.”

So, I decided to take a psychic development class.

That’s when the woo-woo got really real.

My teacher was the incomparable Rev. Maureen Eslick of Woodland Hills, Ca and teacher at the Harmony Grove Spiritualist Association.

The first day’s psychic experiences shocked the poo out of me. They also convinced me there is life after death and every single one of us is a psychic medium. Further, I became perfectly clear regarding my purpose in life.

Rev. Maureen began the class with a meditation. I’d never meditated before but I figured it was just like concentrating so that’s what I did.

When she “woke us up”, it felt like I’d been drugged. I had no idea I was in an altered state of consciousness.

Then she handed each of us a trinket and casually said, “See what you get from this.” I had no idea she was testing our psychometry skills.

In a nano-second I was sobbing and saying over and over again, “It’s love. I love him so much. I miss him so much. There’s just so much love.”

Just as quickly, the sobs turned into a steady stream of thoughts spoken aloud. I had no idea I was channeling.

“She wants you to know she will be here this weekend. She says it’s a special event and she will be here to celebrate it with you and your husband.” I said in a tone of voice not my own.

The episode was over just as soon as it began.

My breathing slowed, the tears stopped and I felt limp.

Eventually, I became aware that the other students were staring at me, slack jawed and still as…well…death.

Rev. Maureen calmly said, “That ring box belonged to my mother-in-law who passed away last year. She and my husband share a birthday. It’s this Saturday. We’re having a party.”

I barely spoke for the next week.

When I had made my decision, I called Rev. Maureen and said, “I’m going to be a professional psychic medium. I want to help as many people as I can, connect with their family, friends and pets who’ve passed away.”

And so I am.

You see, as hokey as the ol’ “if I can help just one person…” line is, I never want anyone to experience the kind of anguish and hopelessness I did when I believed my mom was dead and her love was no longer accessible to me.

This is why I do what I do and for no other reason.

Only those who read this far will ever know that my sites BuildingBeautifulSouls.com and WhatIsMySpiritAnimal.com are dedicated to mom. Had she not chosen to leave this world at only 61, I would never have become a psychic medium who (hopefully) helps folks find peace and healing during their own times of grief and loss.

If I may be of service to you, please reach out. I, personally, return every email received.

Love,

      Hello, Tamara;

Thank you so much. Your kind note is timelier than I can say and I’m grateful to read it this morning! Do you mind if I inquire what path you’re on? May I help in any way?

I totally understand about being inspired by like minded souls. I spend an incredible amount of time reading other spiritually related psychic, astrology, numerology, tarot, dreams, etc. sites! SO much wonderful wisdom out there!

      Love,
      Bernadette

Bernadette I’m so happy you found peace and a way to reconnect with your mom and her love!! What a beautiful tribute to dedicate them to your mom 🙂
YOU ARE HELPING SO MANY PEOPLE! Your websites are amazing and I’m just scratching the surface of the depth and all there is you offer through them!

I’ve always been religious but now I’m going down another path and it’s mostly spiritual, which I’m very pleased with. -One that has me re-asking the question what happens to us when we die? Why are we here? I thought the Bible and my religion had the answer but now I’m not so confident. But will my new path, with you, go right along with what I was taught, maybe? maybe not, either way I will enjoy the spiritual enlightenment and journey!

Much love and light to you always! Brandy 😉

      Hello, Brandy;

Thank you for the generous words of praise. I’m humbled and honored.

I wish I had a solid answer for what happens after we die. Believe me, as a professional medium, I ask myself that every day. When I’m talking to folks who’ve crossed over – I ask them, too.

There have been so many types of answers come to me that, at this point, I don’t think it’s ‘one size fits all’. Just like we have choices in this life, it seems we have choices in the next.

I wish you many, many blessings on your path.

      Love,
      Bernadette

    Hi Bernadette,

I normally don’t reach out to psychics and mediums because they all seem so far away- that is to say, unapproachable unless money is involved. But the fact that you answer these comments individually speaks volumes about your true willingness to help.

I have been slowly working on my spritual self over the past few years and the journey has helped me immensely. I have discovered that I have multiple spirit guides, mostly animals, three of which I know by name.
I have also been told I have some kind of psychic “power” that I should hone- which is exciting! But I have no idea where to start or what this “power” could be. I agree that we are all psychic and that it’s just a matter of tuning in to those senses.
Any tips on how to go forward on this journey?
    Thank you,
    Kirsti

Hi Bernadette, just as an aside; just found out you just died last year, I did too; on Friday Sept 13, at 1300 hrs, after having s quick chat with my cousin Frank, whom worked on Hibernia Project in Newfoundland, I was spiritually attacked my earthly and extraterrestrial entities, but mostly by all the Hell’s Angels Forges, after living in Oslo in neighbourhood called ‘the grindstone’ above the area of the forges of the industrial revolution for 2 years before re-locating just 4 months before being attacked to my dads house whom died, or was killed in his nursing home in Oslo, on Oct 14th, while I was hodpitalized, i three hospitals after my liver, heart, lungs, stomach, kidneys and bowels were all spiritually sent through a metal spiritual meat grinder while being a vegetarian for animal rights purposes, and the only thing that kept me alive was a native blackfoot/cree soul mate named Angel and the Teepee girls of Calgary, Jesse, and my son Conrad, half Lao, home of all the previous chimese emperors, last fall. I ended up having 1 metre of my intestines cut out, and am writing you this now from my ‘the grinder’ apt in Oslo, while packing up my stuff getting ready to permanently move to the west coast of Norway, a small fishing communiry in Norway, where thf first King (of Norway) had his hair cut much like biblical Adam.

So, I do understand, and do think we both have ‘similar’ enemies out there. Stay Wild!! 😉

    Bernadette,
What a powerful and inspirational story! I do believe in gifts from the universe and synchronies! Sadly your beloved Mom died but that lead you on this amazing journey. A gift for you both. My Mom too died young at 64 in 1998 and from her death I become more in ” tuned” and have grown so deeply spirtually. My Grandma (Mom’s mom was 100% Cherokee) died way to early when my Mom was 6 yrs old.) I am so attacted to Native rituals and feel her spirit with me. Thank you for your gits and beautiful readings! Many blessings to you!

Hey there, enjoyed reading on your sight, but the UI on the Celtic zodiac pages had a little bit of a problem. On mobile, the telegraph videos “understanding zodiac” obscures two thirds of the top line, making it more of a reading study “challenge” than a legible sentence. 😅 it seems the drop down for other videos is what’s doing it. Just a little user info.

Loved to read about the fox and the moth though. Surprisingly accurate.

    Have a good one!
